Alcatraz Island People used to spend their lives dreaming of getting out, and now you can get in for just a few dollars. It is Alcatraz Island, which served as a notorious federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963.
“The Rock” once held Al "Scarface" Capone, and the legend is that no one ever escaped from it — and lived to talk about it, that is. Take a tour to view rare wildflowers and plant life, marine wildlife and thousands of roosting and nesting sea birds.
Back on the mainland, and if you’re driving, check out Lombard Street on Russian Hill, the curviest street in America. It’s nicely landscaped and a challenge to negotiate.
Sports Fans of professional sports have plenty to see in the Bay Area.
On the San Francisco side the San Francisco 49ers NFL football team plays September through December, and on the east side the Oakland Raiders maintain a similar NFL schedule.
During baseball season, April through September, you can watch the National League’s San Francisco Giants in AT&T Park, or the Oakland Athletics of the American League.
Gay & lesbian San Francisco has long been welcoming of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LBGT) community, and has many related activities. The LGBT Parade is an annual event the last Sunday in June, and encompasses a two-day festival with entertainment, speakers, merchandise, arts and crafts, and food.
Entertainment There is no shortage of live entertainment in the local clubs and theaters. For more high-brow offerings check the newly renovated De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park for its collection of historical artifacts. Don’t forget its observatory, which overlooks the city.
Photographers can entertain themselves at The San Francisco Art Institute. It has an open campus at 800 Chestnut Street; from the roof deck one can photograph North Beach and the Wharf. |
