San Francisco Stats and Facts

Best views of the Bay are from Coit Tower and Twin Peaks.

The Golden Gate is a toll bridge, but certainly worth it. Take a short drive over it north and pull of at the several overlooks for great vistas of the bridge and city.

Sausalito, just north across the bridge, is a largely unspoiled small town and certainly worth a visit.

Major department stores and high-end retailers are located around Union Square, including a couple large malls. Go to Hayes Valley and along Union Street near the Marina District to find small boutiques with trendy items. Mission and Haight-Ashbury feature thrift shopping and many second-hand and vintage stores.

Mark Twain said: "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."

Of course, the quote stuck because it was so true. The weather in San Francisco is highly variable. The legendary fog is occurs when cold Pacific Ocean currents collide with hot inland weather in the summer and early fall. Otherwise, the climate is cool to mild with cold, rainy winters and dry summers. Bring a variety of clothing.

The San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Ballet perform in The War Memorial Opera House, the Performing Arts Center has a full schedule, and Davies Symphony Hall hosts the San Francisco Symphony.

An annual tradition since 1912, The Bay to Breakers footrace is known as much for its lighthearted spirit as for being an athletic event. The San Francisco Marathon, on the other hand, attracts more than 7,000 mostly serious runners annually.

While San Francisco offers more than 200 miles of bicycle lanes, the hilly terrain demands that you be in good shape.
