SAN_FRANCISCO_HISTORY

A postcard from the past: Then and now, visitors to San Francisco never fail to remark on the city's beauty.
The city of St. Francis
In 1776, while the United States was being founded at the other end of the continent, the Spanish established a fort at the Golden Gate and named its mission for St. Francis of Assisi; the Spanish version gives the city its name.

San Francisco was a minor settlement for decades, but was thrust into the limelight by the spillover from The California Gold Rush of 1848. Author Mark Twin lived in San Francisco for a time, and his writings reflected the life and times here and in the Gold Country in the late 19th Century.

The city suffered a major blow when it was devastated by the 1906 earthquake and fire, and an estimated 3,000 lost their lives. The city was immediately rebuilt and it flourished.

Today with a population of 744,041 San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California and the 14th most populous in the United States. Because it is so densely populated and so strikingly beautiful, home prices in San Francisco are among the highest in the nation.

The city is situated on the San Francisco Peninsula and its close proximity of the Pacific Ocean generates its chilly summer fogs, but steep hills with cable cars and gorgeous views of the bay make it all worthwhile.

Add in the city’s many fine restaurants and a wonderful mixture of Victorian homes with modern architecture and “The City by the Bay” is truly one of America’s finest.
