SAN_FRANCISCO_DISTRICTS

San Francisco is California's fourth most populous city, but it has one of the largest Chinatowns in the country.
A new neighborhood almost every block

The Castro District / Upper Market

Think of San Francisco and the Castro District comes to mind with its well-kept Victorian houses, hilly streets lined with artistic business and cafes, and a major gay community.

Chinatown
A holdover from the heavy Chinese influx in the 19th century, Chinatown is a rich cultural experience where you’ll find signs in Chinese, fish and game in store windows, and some of the best dim-sum in the world.

Civic Center
The artistic center of the city, the Civic Center area includes museums, the Davies Symphony Hall, The War Memorial Opera House and some great period architecture.

Embarcadero / Financial District
This old waterfront area abuts the Financial District and includes a good selection of shops and restaurants.

Fisherman’s Wharf
The seafood capitol of San Francisco, and perhaps the world, Fisherman’s Wharf also includes eclectic shops, great people watching opportunities and historic ships.

Haight-Ashbury / Golden Gate Park
Forty years later, the “Summer of Love” still resonates in American culture. Its repercussions shook us to our core, and at the corner of Haight and Ashbury one can still encounter the counter culture. Wear a flower in your hair.

Japantown / Nihonmachi
This area is rich in culinary delights, and stores offering such diverse products as both high-end and used clothing, kitchen products and home furnishings.

Mission District
Founded in 1791, the Mission Dolores functioned as the original city’s center; now it displays many elegant and stately Victorian homes. It was heavily hit during the 1989 quake.

Nob Hill
In the past, “Nob Hill” was synonymous with wealth and grace, as this was the place where the wealthy built their mansions. Today, the Hill still provides impressive views of the city and Bay, and one can take a cable car through the area.

Presidio / Marina
The Presidio, established in 1776, was the original fort defending the Bay. It was eventually decommissioned and became a national park in 1994.

Union Square
The elite meet here in these trendy shops, luxurious hotels and stately theaters.
