San Francisco:
America's most European of cities

By Bill Stermer

Tony Bennett left his heart here, the car chase scene from Bullit was filmed here, and from the TransAmerica pyramid to the Victorian homes in Alamo Square and everywhere in between, the lure of San Francisco is compelling.

There's a lot here that you will find nowhere else in the United States, or the world, for that matter. And it is all packed into a city which is surprisingly small.

Considered the most European of American cities, San Francisco is an eclectic mix of visions and dreams. Here is the soaring beauty of the Golden Gate Bridge, and below it is the hopelessness of the former prison at Alcatraz.

Golden Gate Park and the Haight-Ashbury District were scenes of protests, love-ins, clashes with police and all that was right — and eventually wrong, apparently — with the peace/love movement.

A vibrant, eclectic and artistic city, with its ever-changing weather, San Francisco also labors under the memory of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that occurred as a World Series game was about to start, and the threat of another . . . someday.

Come for the food, the cozy little neighborhoods, the Old World charm and that wonderful sweep of the Bay, but whatever you do, don’t refer to it as “San Fran” within earshot of a local.
