SAN_DIEGO_HISTORY

A Short History of San Diego
The city takes its name from the fact that, in November of 1602, Sebastián Vizcaíno (1548-1624) sailed here in his flagship, the “San Diego” to survey the California coast. It has retained its nautical flair ever since.

Originally a small, sleepy town, San Diego flourished in the late 19th Century, and boomed when the United States Navy established a coaling station here in 1907. Today, the city boasts 16 military institutions, including those for the Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps.

Many Spanish/Baroque-style buildings were built in Balboa Park for the two World's Fairs the city hosted (the Panama-California Exposition in 1915, and the California Pacific International Exposition in 1935), and are still in use today.
