Boston, the gateway to New England, was founded in 1630 by Puritans. It is the capital of Massachusetts.
Home to great institutions of medicine, education, technology and finance.
Boston got its irreverent nickname, “Beantown,” from early merchants baking beans with molasses. Bostonians really don’t like the nickname. It is regarded as a cultural affront and may earn you a punch in the nose (which is cultural, apparently). Preferred nicknames are The Hub (of the Universe), The Cradle of Liberty, City on the Hill, Athens of America.
Really.
Boston is not as big as it looks on the map. The city proper is condensed and quite walkable to most points of interest.
Boasting one of the most confounding urban road systems in the world, Boston is much easier to walk around than drive. Park it, get out, walk; you’ll see more with less aggravation. Or take the subway, which goes to most places you want to be. By the way, parking at Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA, “T” for short) commuter rail and terminal subway locations is only a few bucks per day. Do it, and get some exercise.
The Curse of the Bambino: In the lore and legend of baseball, no management blunder stands out more than the trade of arguably the game’s greatest player ever to the New York Yankees. No one can even remember what Boston got in exchange, but everyone knows it signaled a decline in the Boston Red Sox fortunes that spanned decades. Boston and New York have been locked in a rabid rivalry ever since that has only grown more intense over the years. |
